Head of Research, Dr. Merja Helle, presents the notion of the media concept, which has been the main idea and theme for several years of the Media Concepts Research Group, Aalto School of Arts, Design and Architecture, founded in 2006. The research group’s current interest is user involvement in the design process of media concepts:
Based on activity theory we have developed with professor Maija Töyry the notion of a media concept, which we have used in several media concept laboratories, and teaching about changing media. The media concept consists of three main components: 1) publishers goals and values, social situation, audience needs, journalistic culture, and technology; 2) architecture of the organizations, and the media product; 3) everyday work practices in creating content. We have used this concept in several media concept laboratories to develop or create new media products together with the media organizations. Our present interest is understanding and involving users in the process.
